In the wake of globalization, the myth has spread that pop culture elements in video games, anime and TV series shape us from childhood with a universal iconography. By telling children around the world the same narratives, this process homogenizes children's experiences on a planetary level, weakening perhaps the thread of transmission of traditional local narratives.

Like all myths, this one mixes truth with falsehood. As now we can percieve that the products of globalized culture are perceived very differently in different contexts and reinterpreted based on the map of signs that permeate each individual region. Supranational pop culture enters into a dialog with local sign networks, forms of play, and the particularities of everyday family experience. The global expansion of the entertainment market and the rejection of a future horizons as a result of the standardization of the free-market world economy have led artists away from the dreary present to a nostalgic contemplation of childhood. That childhood that promised to be a space of play, where all our senses are open to wonder, the magic of imagination and joy.

This exhibition aims to look at the interplay between nostalgic memory and local perceptions of global pop culture through the lens of artists from three different countries - Costa Rica, Mexico and South Korea.  The artists' works focus on childhood, play, memories and family memory archives. This nostalgia for the past has nothing conservative about it, but rather represents an opportunity to rethink the recreation of a future horizon and revitalize the utopian imagination through an archaeology of its emotional sources in childhood. This revision of the past allows us not only to experience the creativity and hope that characterize childhood, but also to dream of a new possible future. It is hoped that the key to liberation from the constraints of the present may be the childhood imagination, with its unique ability to envision the impossible.
